DRC and EU Forge Strategic Partnership to Transform Mining Sector
At the 28th meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) Minister of Mines, Kizito Pakabomba, announced the signing of a comprehensive roadmap with the European Union (EU).
This ambitious partnership seeks to leverage the DRC’s vast mineral wealth as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive development.
The roadmap comprises 25 strategic actions across five key pillars: attracting investment, enhancing local infrastructure, improving governance and transparency in the mining sector, fostering scientific and technological cooperation, and creating skilled employment opportunities.
The overarching goal is to maximize the value of the country’s natural resources through in-country processing and transformation.
Government Spokesperson Patrick Muyaya emphasized that this initiative aligns seamlessly with the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, positioning the DRC as a pivotal player in the global energy transition.
Minerals from the DRC are essential for manufacturing electric vehicle batteries and other green technologies critical to achieving climate goals.
Minister Pakabomba highlighted that the roadmap represents a significant shift in the country’s approach to the mining sector. The strategy aims to increase state revenues, create employment opportunities, and develop infrastructure in mining regions. It also seeks to curb illegal resource exploitation and promote more responsible and sustainable management of mineral resources.
This initiative underscores a commitment to building a sustainable and inclusive partnership, ensuring that the Congolese population benefits directly from the nation’s rich mineral deposits.
Under the coordination of the Prime Minister’s Office, the government is dedicated to implementing projects arising from this roadmap to achieve the country’s development goals.
